Energetic Procession

For the sake of fluidity in the attemp to formulate a scientific proof for the existence of God I moved our comments out of the Evolution post. The main purpose for that was that we were not even close to talking about evolution and there was probably no way we were ever going there in this conversation.

Joel,

You have become a writing machine!
I totally identified with you on your other post about "knowing a little bit of this, a little bit of that" and struggling to find your voice. It would appear you are beginning to hit your stride.
At some point I'll get off my lazy blogging tush and post something new.
I did get heavily involved on Energetic Procession in the commenting and did some heavy thinking in many of my posts there.
If you care to check it out, please be aware that much of the content is polemical and some of my own posting became heated. I later apologized to the blogger with whom I discoursed and learned some lessons.
I would be interested in some of your thoughts.
In any case, I love you bro and miss you.
We'll talk soon.

Hullo Sophocles,

I have been reading the posts on Energetic Procession for way to long now (over an hour!) and I find it exhausting. I personally had to quit discussing reunion between the East and West. First of all I do not see any point in laymen trying to hash out the differences between our churches - they are both top-down leadership styles so discussions between laymen have no legal authority in the Church. While the Latin Church would accept anything the Pope does as speaking on behalf of the entire Western Church, the Eastern Church does not. As you so frequently point out the highest authority the Eastern Church recognizes is an ecumenical council, so I find it hard to believe anyone is serious about reunification without first calling for a universal council of bishops in the order of Nicaea, Constantinople or Chalcedon. For me it is too painful to discuss when I know my efforts are truly fruitless. I would love to discuss reunion or the bars to it in a forum that would actually make a difference in the status of our communion, but blog sites just do not carry that kind of weight. I am not sure if I ever fully communicated the depth of my sorrow to you over our division. It pains me much more than leaving my wife! When I was at the Easter Vigil at St. Paul two years ago I could actually see my heart torn down the middle - just as clearly as if someone had drawn a picture and pasted it on the alter, my soul was grieved like never before. I really, really love the Orthodox Church very deeply and I think I see the truth, beauty and mystery She holds just as clearly as any Orthodox Christian, but I see that in Rome as well and I know that I am a Latin Christian from the tip of my head right down to the soles of my feet and the Roman Church is where I belong, just as that is true for you and the Greek Church.

By the way, I keep meaning to ask if Aristotle made it to Vegas in one piece? I saw him in a book store here in town and remembered a conversation the two of us shared about praying for the salvation of the ancient Greeks so I could not resist purchasing the statue and sending it to you. I hope you like it! Any way, I miss you and I love you too. I look forward to talking soon.

Joel,

My sincere apologies, Joel. I thought I had thanked you for Aristotle but you're right, I never have. Thank you for him. I have the bust in my kitchen.

I directed you to that blog because I was really forced to crystalize my thinking. I know your heart, brother, and it pains me too about our separation. My whole point on those points, as well as the Orthodox in general, is that there should be no such thing as "Latin Christianity" or "Greek Christianity" as such. There is one common apostolic faith meant to heal the human person from the one common fall and I was attempting to being to Drew's attention the history of the divergence between the two communions which he seemed to be unaware of ,or to him, as to so many modern Americans, being aware of it it didn't register why what I and some of the other bloggers were writing about was so important, nay, vital, to the correct(orthodox) understanding of the Faith which entails salvation on a cosmic scale.
I hope I made some sense.

Sincerely,

Sophocles

Sophocles,
I agree absolutely - there should be no distinction between our faiths. There is nothing wrong with minor differences in tradition, but the faith we received from the Apostles needs to remain in tact and lived and taught in all Christian traditions.

Joel,

Oops. Sorry. Didn't mean to carry on so much on this thread and derail it.

No worries,
You didn't do anything wrong. I am happy to chat, and it is easy to move posts. I just wanted to keep that one catagory in particular free of chatter that is off the topic because of the nature of the discussion. I do not want to give the impression that there are rules to follow.

The next post I am going to write in my proof will attempt to scientifically disprove evolution and I know you have many good thoughts about that. Would you like to share them with me?

I'll do my best. But over at Energetic Procession, a new post has been put up which continues along the lines of the one I was involved in and my thinking is straining to put words to thoughts I wish to speak of on this subject.

The post is long, but it incapsulates a "hidden" world, so to speak, which to the Orthodox who has experienced it, is alive yet one which lies hidden to those without.
